Excellent post Em! My son could have been Trayvon. Or your boys. Or anyone's child. While I'm thankful my son has *yet* to deal with racism based on something as insignificant as his skin color.... Our world isn't where it should be. This whole thing makes me sick. Innocent lost or opening up our children's eyes to a world that isn't right and fair and praying they get it. Become leaders and maybe possibly change the world?

When you're raising black children, I'm sorry to say this is a lesson they need to learn early. Maybe one day, this place will truly be color-blind. Maybe by having these conversations with our children (the black ones and the white!) early, they will grow up wanting to change something that has been broken for a very long time.

I don't think there is anything to be gained by pretending this doesn't happen. With frightening regularity. The change will come when people can admit this IS still happening. With regularity. And that SHOULD be frightening.

Good post. I was reading about Trayvon today and watching (or listening rather) to the youtube videos that are up about this.
I think kids hear a lot more than we'd like to think and having an honest conversation empowering them like you said is the only and best thing we can do as parents. I don't have to deal with that yet because my kids are too young, but kudos to you.
